Nero - Laura Alice

£60.00

Screenprint - limited edition of 50

Emily Brontë rescued a merlin from an abandoned nest on the moors and named it Nero. In an untitled poem, she alludes to fantasising about the freedom of the bird and herself. This image captures the magic of the moorland surrounding Bradford; how easily we can step out of the hustle and bustle to escape into an expanse of sky, heather and ferns. The moor doesn’t judge or discriminate, here we can just be; we can fly free. To create this screen print, I made a papercut illustration of the merlin, layered with hand-written text.

About the Artist

Laura Alice is an illustrator and printmaker based in West Yorkshire. Laura’s work is heavily inspired by nature and birdlife that she sees on her walks around the local area. She interprets these experiences through an illustrative style, using vibrant colours, painterly marks and textures. Laura’s work depicts a moment, a memory, a connection, but viewed through her own frenzied lens where a soft muted brown bird may become neon pink. Her work communicates how nature can calm us, juxtaposed with its drama; both making us feel more present, but also insignificant.
