Drawing on recent research into her genealogy, ‘But where are you REALLY from?' traces migration routes and family histories through stitched, root-like patterns mapped onto fabric.
Saira Baig is a Bradford-based visual artist working across textiles, printmaking, and embroidery. Her intricate, layered works explore human connection, memory, and environmental fragility. Inspired by nature and ancestral stories, she often uses recycled materials and delicate stitching to reflect on sustainability, identity, and the interconnectedness of all living things.
Saira has been awarded an OUR TURN bursary to create this new textile-based artwork exploring her personal and ancestral journeys. Drawing on recent research into her genealogy, the work will traces migration routes and family histories through stitched, root-like patterns mapped onto fabric. Using projected maps as a base, she has experimented with new scale and embroidery techniques to bring the work to life. The project continues her interest in environmental and emotional connection, linking home, memory, and nature. By layering personal stories with universal themes of belonging and movement, Saira’s work aims to be both deeply intimate and widely resonant.
